Attn: Cranky, Stressed Women: It's NOT You, It's Your Hormones!

Well, I have to toot my own horn and it’s not something I’m particularly comfortable doing. However, I’m thrilled that my application to speak at the National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavorial Medicine (NICABM)at Hilton Head, S. Carolina in December of this year was accepted. This is the largest mind-body conference and the title of my presentation, based on Intentional JOY is: “Lite” Addictions: The Weapons of Mass Distraction. I’m excited and a little “freaked” out.

I recently combined learning with girlfriend fun time and attended a talk by John Gray, author of the Men are Mars series. His new book, Venus on Fire, Mars on Ice, explains how and why stressedwomen get so cranky at 6:00 p.m. when they get home to their 2nd job (and see their men lying on the couch) and WHAT to do about it. (See article below for the newest research on stress, hormones – and activities & supplements you can implement to have more energy, resilience and happiness).

The first Men are from Mars book softened my relationship with my husband Dave and his with me. After reading the book together, I no longer thought he was a jerk for lazing on the couch. I knew he needed to retreat to his cave and I was able to cut him more slack. He learned to take my outbursts less personally and realized he didn’t need to “fix” whatever I was venting about. I have referred that first book to hundreds of clients over the years and still think it’s a must-read for new couples.

Feature Article

When Women are STRESSED & Cranky We Need to Give Ourselves Permission to Relax, Replenish and Feel Heard!

Women are in the workforce today like our mothers and grandmothers were not. We’re not just imagining that we’re more stressedthan men - we are. According to Dr. John Gray’s research from his latest book Venus on Fire, Mars on Icewomen in the work world are at least 2x as stressed as men.

Work is about problem solving, urgency and competition which raise dopamine and testosterone levels for men and women. For men this is great. And, it’s ok for women, but work lowers the hormone oxytocin, which is produced when we’re giving or receiving care or love, and is a major stress reliever when our levels are full.

You know how men will respond with a “What’s the big deal” to our reaction, well, ok, sometimes overreaction to what looks to them like a minor event? Here’s why: when women are stressed there is 8X more blood flow to the emotional part of our brain than a man’s. 8 times!!! No wonder we get cranky and he doesn’t get it - we have different brain chemistry so they don’t understand our reactions.

As if you didn’t already know this intuitively, women’s minds are always busy – men can lay on the couch and let their brain fall out watching TV – and by the way they’re replenishing the testesterone that’s been depleted during their work day. (Don’t get mad at me – this is according to Dr. Gray.)

We already know women are more stressed than men at work. Then women come home to their 2nd job and see their partner lying on the couch and guess what happens to those stress/cortisol levels? That’s right -- through the roof.

What To Do To Lower Stress & Raise Feel Good Oxytocin Levels:

When we’re overwhelmed with life’s demands, do we blow the whistle, say “Time Out – I need a break?” NO – we lean in, get more determined to get the LIST done and guess what? We get even crankier. By then we’re totally out of oxytocin, the feel good hormone. What our body needs for us to do –is to receive, relax, have some fun, STOP and replenish those oxytocin levels by doing some of the following activities:

Talk to friends, or your partner, and feel HEARD (this is SO important), get a mani, pedi or your hair done, listen to music, make love, take a yoga class, sing, get a massage, read a book, ask for help (yes – that works also), take a walk in nature, laugh, arrange flowers, garden, go on a family picnic, lay in the hammock, stare at the stars, visit an art gallery, hang out with friends.

According to Dr. Gray, we need to do some of these oxytocin rebuilding activities every day. Why don’t we? We feel Selfish & Guilty if we put ourselves first. Here’s my coaching advice:Reframe Selfish to Self-LOVE and remember the old airplane adage – put your O2 mask on FIRST? Do these Self-Care activities and you will feel better – I’m off to visit girlfriends right now – ah…. I feel better already.

5 Behavior Changes to Manage Time & Stress

5 Behavior Changes to Manage Time & Stress
(adapted from Modesto Bee article 5-11-10 by Cindy Krischer Goodman, Miami Herald)

1) Schedule a 2 p.m. check-In:Instead of waiting until the end of the day to check your “to-do” list, check it at 2 p.m. This afternoon review allows you to appreciate what you’ve accomplished and stay conscious of what still remains so you can get out of the office by 5 p.m.

2) Make a "Not-to-Do" List: For example, if you’re constantly checking emails, decide not to do so and schedule emails times 3x a day. My husband, Dave, answers his at 7 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. That’s it. Emails turn into “shiny objects and are potentially huge TIME WASTERS.

3) Live in your Calendar: "People spend their entire days tethered to their inboxes and loses sight of what they’re supposed to be doing," said Dan Markovitz, president of TimeBack Management. He recommends changing the setting of your software program so the calendar opens first rather than the email box. Staying aware of your calendar throughout the day allows you to focus on the details of projects, but keep the big picture in mind.

4) Know the Outcome: Before you make a phone call or go into a meeting, know the desired outcome. I learned this from my first business Coach Kendall Summerhawk. If you take a minute to think about what your desired outcome is for a phone call, for example, to get an appointment, or to close the sale, it not only will produce better results, but help you maintain your energy. Energy like time, is a precious resource.

5) Get the Hardest Task Done First: Stuart R. Levine, author of "Cut to the Chase," recommends identifying the most important thing you want to get done each day and doing it first. My very well organized Aunt Phyllis used to say get the hardest thing done first – everything’s easier after that. Follow the message that works for you because the point is pretty much the same.

Intrinsic Elements
1214 “J” Street (between 12th & 13th) Modesto, CA

I’m really excited to spotlight Susie Fagundes & Michelle Van Artsdalen’s new Modesto store, Intrinsic Elements. This is a classy gift store with a holistic slant. There is plenty of “bling” including bracelets, necklaces, darling blouses for grown-ups and little girls, as well as stones, cards and artwork. Just go and have fun experiencing. There’s also a good size conference room that can be rented for classes.

Here are Susie’s words to describe their vision about Intrinsic Elements:

"For the past fifteen years my daughter-in-law Michelle and I have talked about opening a retail gift store with an holistic theme. About two years ago, a good friend of ours started to ask what action we had taken to make the store a reality. We started visualizing what the store would look like, asking how it would serve the Greater Good. In December 2010 the perfect location presented itself and the dream of our store became Intrinsic Elements."

Personal Note

My husband Dave and I are celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary this Saturday with what he keeps calling a "wedding" and I a "party." We met 34 years ago. He won me over then and he’s still winning me over. I feel so lucky to have Dave as my partner, friend and lover and to still feel mushy when I think about him. The picture was taken in La Paz, Mexico (north of Puerto Vallarta) We were quite RELAXED and happy. We make it a point to take at least one two week vacation each year. This year we’re going back to Mexico in September. What we both know is that having a good relationship is like anything worthwhile, it takes work. And, it’s worth the effort.

What's It Mean When Even Oprah Isn't Rich Enough?

What Does It Mean When Even Oprah Isn’t Rich Enough?

There are 89 women billionaires on the Forbes list of richest people and only 14 of them are self-made. Seven of these women are from China. Oprah? She’s 400th on the list. What does it mean when even Oprah isn’t rich enough to qualify as one of the world’s richest women? Maybe not as much as you might think.

Money equals power and happiness, right? Well, let’s look at that belief. On the one hand, we’ve been taught that "money can’t buy happiness," but inside do we really believe that? Seventy-percent of CEO’s that answered this question responded yes. (I’m not sure how the average working woman would answer this question.) Yet, research from Dr. Edward Diener who conducted a 13 year study cited in Hoyt’s book The Ethical Executive, shows that "the amount of influence money has on our happiness is less than 2%."

What Does The Average Women Know That CEO’S Don’t?

I talk to women all day every day and what do I hear them saying about what they value? Time with family and friends, time for themselves, community and church involvement, caring for their home, animals, yards. I don’t hear that they LOVE making money, for the sake of making money. It’s what money can purchase for us, in terms of the above, that increases life satisfaction and fulfillment.

But, how much money is enough? We all know that struggling to pay the bills is no picnic. Peggy Orenstein, of the New York Times Magazine, says that financial independence is not a billion dollars, but somewhere around $40,000 a year. What? We have been socialized (trained) to think that the more we make the happier we’ll be, but it’s not true. Research shows that the happiness that comes from getting a raise or even winning the lottery lasts a short time (only 18 months even for lottery winners) and then we return to our previous level of happiness.

My coaching tagline is: "I support women to make more $$ and have more FUN." Am I saying we shouldn’t desire to make a good living? Not at all. But it is important to evaluate how much money you really need to be happyThe energy we expend on our business does take time away from the activities that bring greater life satisfaction. The question is how do we stay true to what we value and have more FUN doing while making money.

 Personal Note

Whew. What a month – There have been highs and lows. First the low: my husband, Dave, and I had to put our 14 year-old German Shepard, Maggie, to sleep. Really hard. I look for her every time I walk in the house. It’s amazing how much of a void her absence has created. She was a rescue dog and we were blessed to have her for 12 years. And, yes, we will welcome another dog into our lives sometime this year. Loving is always a risk, and one worth making.

The highs: It’s spring – sort of. It’s been chillier than usual this spring and the gift is that my white long stemmed tulips have lasted a month. I can almost taste the air on the warm days
as the aroma from the orange tree blossoms waft in through the window. Heavenly.

Kim Kelly, Professional Woman polo Player for 18 years and now successful real estate associate in La Quinta, CA.

I’m really happy and proud to spotlight my cousin Kim this month. You might know that there aren’t many women polo players in the world. This is for good reason – it’s one of the toughest and most dangerous of sports and it’s usually played only by those with lots of capital to buy and support all those ponies.

Kim played professionally, with the men, for 18 years. I saw the dedication, the drive, the plain hard-work it took for her to become the horse woman, polo player and business woman that she is today. While she no longer plays professionally, she still tournaments and recently was named MVP at the Women’s Championship Tournament at the Eldorado Polo Club in Indio, CA. She says “winning is extra fun and I was one of the oldest players in the games.”

Kim also sells real estate and works primarily with investors. Her tagline is "I’ve got what you want" and she does.
Check out her real estate blog www.k2sells.com. She’s an excellent writer and daily updates about what’s happening with the market.

Americans are addicted to being something they're not...

"Americans are addicted to being something they’re not. They’re addicted to things," says Oprah. Eckhart Tolle, author of The Power of Now: "Things and conditions can give you pleasure, but they cannot give you joy."

Brad made an appointment for counseling by explaining that he was addicted to shopping, fast food & internet porn. I thought – wow – he’s so American. If you have ever been so stressed or anxious that you’ve reached for the closest piece of chocolate or run for a quick latté to make yourself feel better, you can relate. It’s so common to reach for the quickest relief advertisers recommend when we’re overwhelmed, stressed or anxious.

Most of us long for more happiness, but don’t always know how to achieve it. For a long time, I didn’t either. I grew up in the quintessential addictive home – alcoholic mother, sports and gambling obsessed dad – abuse, depression and anxiety. Today I know how to let go of the “upset” feelings and create peace and happiness. I’m not saying every day is a JOYfest - I have my challenging days too – that’s life. But, I’ve found a secret. The key is to go into, rather than away from upset. It’s paradoxical, but when we use body-mind strategies, like those in Intentional JOY we move through stress & upset quickly, and get back to feeling good. Isn’t that freeing?

Are we all addicted?

Escapes such as a glass of wine (or 3 or 4) or a hit of pot, or shopping, or food, distract us from life problems temporarily, but don’t solve them, or the underlying feelings. If you find yourself relating, take a breath, and try to be nonjudgmental.

The Solution:

The three strategies in Intentional JOY that help to quickly and easily reduce stress and anxiety (which are under most addictions) are Conscious Breathing, TARA, Emotional Freedom Technique and Imagery. TARA allows you to identify what feelings are underneath the upset in a quick, easy format. Then EFT, which can be thought of as psychological acupressure, releases the upset from the body. New brain neuroscience research shows that just naming emotions is often enough to feel better, but we have to know how. For more info go to (www.emofree.com) for video “how-to’s” and Intentional JOY
for the written TARA process.

3 Self-Care Strategies to Thrive in Times of Change

“Change is inevitable, growth is optional.”

I first started presenting seminars on CHANGE in 1991, which was another time of economic challenge, though not nearly as intense as this period. I understand this time period has been named: “The Great Recession.” I think I’ll reframe that to “The Great Opportunity.”

I don’t know how it is with you and the people in your lives these days, but what I’m noticing is “it’s (by “it” I mean everything) hitting the fan.” Just a few examples: economic struggle, job loss, break ups, re-negotiating relationships, addiction problems coming to the surface, health problems, aging, babies being born, illness, etc. Whew…let’s all take 10 deep breaths.

If you’re feeling wiped out by the enormity of change that’s occurring personally and culturally, you’re not alone.
The good news is that all of these life events provide us with the opportunity to choose whether we will react out of habitual fear patterns or learn to respond with love, care, compassion and kindness to ourselves and those around us.

Three Self-CARE Strategies to Thrive in Times of CHANGE:

1) Be aware of whether you’re at the beginning, middle or end of a change process. Transition starts with an ending, then a chaotic middle time, and finally a new beginning. It’s the middle time that feels the worst and where we need the most support – a friend, counselor, priest, journal, whatever works for you.

2) BE Gentle with yourself. This too shall pass. (My kitchen remodel WILL be done…before Thanksgiving.) For the Mind:Reframe negative self-talk to positive. For the body: Take 10 breaths, a walk or stretch. Don’t over-indulge any cravings. It just makes you feel worse. For the Spirit: Read an inspirational passage from your favorite spiritual book. For your Emotions:Try the TARA process in Intentional JOY (pg. 164), or Emotional Freedom Technique.

3) DO: Create an action plan based on what you need. For example: Less Money Available. List out expenses and income and
see what you can cut. A food budget hint: Make a menu, a list from the menu and shop at a discount grocer.

Paul Zane Pilzer, economist and bestselling author says that the most successful people today will not necessarily be the best but the fastest and I will add – the fastest to change. The great opportunity during these CHANGING times is to get very clear about what is most important to you and to take really good, loving care of yourself, no matter what you’re faced with.

Call (209) 492-8745 with any questions or email me atlynntelfordsahl@gmail.com.

Personal Note

I went on my first cruise in October and it was a blast. I now GET why people love to cruise. Everything is taken care of once you’re on board – from food to fun. With my girlfriends, I "cha-cha’d," line-danced, ate wonderful food, golf-carted around Catalina Island and toured Ensenada, Mexico. Next cruise for me is Alaska with my husband Dave.

Currently, Dave and I are remodeling our kitchen. I’d much rather cruise. I’m practicing ALL of my self-care strategies double time – breathing, humor, (some of you know the HA HA breath), tapping and staying focused on what I want – the vision of my new kitchen. Gratitude helps also. I’ll let you know next month how it’s gone.

And, on a business note – Amazon.com ordered 15 copies ofIntentional JOY in 1 week – a record. Thank you, thank you!

Announcing: Money Magic Monthly Teleseminar: The Money Magic Seminar Sat. the 19th was a huge success. To support the excitement about learning how to blend the practical action steps we all need to make and deal with money AND to know how to collapse negative beliefs and create what you REALLY want I’m launching this monthly support group seminar.

The monthly Money Magic Teleseminar will be the 3rd Wed of each month, the next call being today, Weds. Nov. 18 at 7:00 – 7:45PT. You’ll be able to sign up for this on my website and I’ll send out announcements. The fee is $5.95 a month for the first 3 months and then $7.95. Ridiculously low fees for the amount of practical knowledge, and inspiration you’ll receive. If you can’t wait call (209) 492-8745 and I’ll start a list for my V.A. who is putting all this together for me – thank you Carrie!!
