Embracing the Pandemonium

Personal Note

I heard a woman last week say: “No Balance Is The New Balance.” I get it - my life is way more hectic now than 5 years ago. But I reacted to that statement because I want more for us.

I used to consider myself the model of Balance, and I still work at it every day with exercise, meditation, prayer and FUN.
But some days…

Flying from one phone call to the next, cramming in a 15 minute lunch before running to the next appointment, I have to ask in my best Dr. Phil voice, “How’s this working for me?” Not as well as I’d like.

Let’s reframe NO Balance to Embracing the Pandemonium (a title a young woman shared from a school essay). YES – life is chaotic, we’re all wearing more hats than we used to, everything is changing and the fast pace can make it hard for us to find the center within. So let’s just take a BREATH, appreciate and stay kind to ourselves and each other and know we’re doing the best we can!!

Are You A Prisoner Of Technology?

You’re driving your children to school or practice and you barely hear what they’re telling you because you’re on the phone.
You say, “Honey, I’ll get to you in a minute. I’ve just got to take this call.”

At home during dinner, you text your friend about the networking event coming up later this week. Then another call comes in and you barely eat your dinner, much less enjoy any family time.
After dinner, the kids are doing homework and you’re on Facebook tending your garden, or updating your status. It’s fun, but the mail hasn’t been brought in for days, the bills have yet to be paid and who has time to exercise?

STOP – Take a breath, slow down and ask yourself what your priorities really are. Then ask if what you say is most important is backed up with what you’re doing.

My friend Lisa told me she realized she had created a littleprison of technology and felt locked up inside and never present with her family. I remember a time a few of us girlfriends drove to Pleasanton, CA to hear John Gray speak and gently kidded Lisa into putting the cell away and talking with us.

Lisa shared she’s now created boundaries with email and FB and when her cell rings and her children are there she says OUT LOUD to the cell phone, “You are not more important than my children.” That makes her children smile.

Coaches Challenge: Notice, without judging, when you’re missing out on connecting with the people you’re with. Make a commitment to UNPLUG for at least 30 minutes every day.

Peggy’s 4 Easy Rules to Follow for Less Clutter:

1. Purge file drawers 1 at a time, and do the same with book shelves, drawers, and one stack of paper litter at a time. It’s like eating an apple – one bite at a time.

2. Do not keep more than one utility bill for each service. You only need the most recently paid.

3. Credit Card Statements: Examine monthly statements for errors, pay and file only most current statement. If there’s an error, notify company, keep future statements until error has been corrected. Look at year end statement for amount of interest you have paid and if made for business the interest can be written off.

4. Use PLEASURE in your life as a reward and not as an escape.

4 Short, Snappy Tips for Connecting with Crazy-Busy Prospects

Personal Note

Mexico, New Puppy & a spot of Grief:

I’m a big advocate of taking time off to re-group, replenish and RELAX. My husband Dave and I just got back from our second 2 week vacation in Mexico this year. Yes, we love it there and I’m grateful for the time off.

The day after we got back I brought Luna, a 6 month old poodle-terrier mix home and boy has our life changed!! Some of you will remember our last girl – Maggie, the german shepherd, that was with us for 12 years. I still miss her, but felt ready to open my heart, and wouldn’t you know, Luna just presented herself.

We’ve always been large dog people, so this little 14 pound wonder is completely different. She doesn’t have me wrapped around her paw yet, but that’s because I have a great trainer friend who’s teaching me how to help her be a well-behaved pup.

Yesterday my 8 year-old granddaughter Grace and I went to see the movie Secretariat. The reviews weren’t that good, but I knew we’d love it. Secretariat’s owner, Penny, a 70s wife and mom who took over her dad’s training business, had such a kinship with “Big Red” as she called him. I burst into tears during the movie and in the bathroom afterwards because their relationship reminded me of the one I was lucky enough to have with my black Morgan “Mando” who was with me for 17 years. If you’re an animal person I urge you to see this movie. Animals can be amazing friends.

4 Short, Snappy Tips for Connecting with Crazy-Busy Prospects

If you’re in sales, whether you own a business, or work for someone, you may be experiencing frustration as you call or try to connect with prospects and find they don’t return your calls.

Here are 4 short and snappy tips to keep your sanity, maintain your relationships and create a WOW factor.

1) Jill Konrath, author of SNAP, Selling and Selling to Big Companies, says to “be invaluable by bringing them helpful ideas and information they can’t live without.” As I’m reading the paper, or business magazines I mark articles to send to send to specific clients or targets.

2) Send a short article by snail mail that’s specifically geared to your client’s business or needs. My clients tell me they look forward to the relevant, brief information they receive every 60 days or so.

3) KISS: Keep it simple and short. Everyone is inundated with information so when you leave a phone or email message state the reason you’re calling, what’s in it for them to call you back and don’t forget to follow-up.

4) WOW: What will make your customers or clients say “Wow” about your service or product? Recently, a coaching client, Melissa Barry of IT Solutions/Curry, Modesto, CA wowed her clients and prospects by setting up a special event at The State Theatre, Modesto’s local art theatre. She asked for and received the support of a large vendor to pay for a good portion of the event. The event included pertinent, relevant and helpful IT information for her clients, plus the movie The Matrix. Think of what you can do to create a WOW for your clients.

Reality Check: From Doing to Being

Paintball Isn’t Just for Boys – Anymore….

Yes, girls (and mature women) can and do play paintball. In fact, I’ve played a number of times. I’ll share a secret - my inner warrior comes out on the field and I find I LOVE getting the other guy.

You’ll want to be on my team.

A few weeks ago my cousin Kim and I had the chance to play at my son Rich’s and his wife Gina’s field – Extreme Paintball It was so much fun. For most of the two hours we played, Kim and I were the only women in a field of 35 boys and men.

Paintball is great for team building because it requirescommunicationstrategizing to capture the opponents flag, strength (the 10 pound gun felt like 30 at the end) and a sense of adventure. Yes, it does sting to get hit, but it’s not awful and the adrenaline rush is worth a little discomfort.

I think playing is MORE fun with all women – so if you’re interested email me and I’ll let you know when.

Reality Check Time – From Doing to Being!

I’m concerned about the level of exhaustion, stress and worry I see amongst clients and friends. I know we’re all running as fast as we can to grow our business or sometimes just to keep our head above water and pay the bills. Whew….take a breath – in fact take 10 –conscious breathing increases oxygen to the brain by 25%.

I’ve taught EFT many times over the last ten years, but this time I couldn’t help but pay attention to a new level of exhaustion I’m noticing.

Towards the end of the seminar (and yes, it was the afternoon) when everyone was relaxed from the EFT process, there were women in the class that kept nodding off. They were trying valiantly to stay awake and present, but losing the battle. Now I’m not going to take it personally because many of these women had talked about how challenging it is to keep up with the pace of their lives and they’re not alone. Let’s be honest – we’re all feeling the intensity of life right now and it’s not just about the economy.

We women drive ourselves to get everything possible done andTHEN we can rest. But when we try to rest, guess what? We feel GUILTY!! So, we get back to it. The movie Eat, Pray, Love has a great comment about this subject: “Americans don’t know how to BE."

Here is a 7 STEP Process to give yourself a reality check, to replenish, and restore energy and to practice “being.”

It takes 5 minutes – you deserve it – and you WILL feel better.

1) Take Your Stress Temperature – Rate your average STRESS level on a scale of 0-10 (10 high) Don’t judge yourself – just notice what the number is.
2) Notice where in your body you most feel the tension/stress.
3) Write down the top 3 things that are botheringyou.
4) Write out any angry, sad, afraid or guilty FEELINGS about the situation.
5) Take 10 full, slow, deep breaths.
6) What’s one or two ACTION steps you will take by WHEN.
7) Re-RATE your STRESS on a scale of 0-10. If it hasn’t dropped, take 10 more breaths.

Please take care of yourself – you’re the only one that truly can. Intense times require intense self-care. Situations are what they are – it’s our choice how we move through those situations!!

3 Tips to Transform “Downsized & Out of a Job” to a New Career

I just got back from a week in North Carolina visiting my daughter Suzann. Some of you know that I just met my daughter ten years ago having placed her for adopted when I was 15. This reconnection has been such a blessing and joy in my life. Each time we get together we build closeness and memories. I realized that so much of what “family” means is about the heart memories we build together over time. Over the last ten years Suzann and I have built wonderful memories – from my first look at her, to this last visit – lots of time on her boat and in the lake. It’s REALLY hot in the South in the summer.

I was privileged to meet her mom Eary before she passed away. Her Dad, Bob, lives in his own studio at Suzann’s beautiful lake-side home. Suzann and her father have a special relationship and adore each other. Bob has always been very welcoming of me and I’ve come to think of him as family also.

3 Tips to Transform “Downsized & Out of a Job” to a New Career

While I was vacationing in North Carolina with my daughter Suzann, a high-powered sales manager for a plastics manufacturing company, she noted a disturbing trend among her women friends in their 40s and 50s. These women are being “downsized.” Gail, was let go a year and a half ago “because of the economy” and because her salary and benefits were expensive compared to the 20 something right out of school that was hired to replace her. Suzann said if this was just one friend she would have bought the “it’s just the economy,” reasoning. But, it’s not. Many of her older professional women friends have found themselves without a job and without the prospects to go back into their known field. Instead of earning $50,000 - $80,000 a year the downsized find themselves surviving on unemployment or part-time jobs and grateful for that.

So, what’s the silver lining here? When we’re in transition it’s an excellent time to:

1) Start a business. A survey from Kelly Services finds that 26% of U.S. workers are free agents – freelancers, contractors, small business owners – up from 19% in 2006. An eWomen survey released in February of 2009 reports 72.5% of businesswomen are “charging ahead and keeping a positive outlook.” Working for yourself is often less risky today than working for a large corporation reports Success Magzine, Sept 2010.

2) Get re-trained in a new profession. The hot nowcareers are good news for women – they are Health Care, Sales & Marketing, Technology and Accounting and Finance. I know so many women in the insurance and financial planning arena.

3) Remember that the Personal and the Professional are One. What do I mean by that? When we’re in a place of transition – between jobs or relationships – this is the time to go within and listen to your heart, your soul’s longing and desire for purpose. It’s time to take stock of where you’re at and begin to develop a VISION for where you want to go. We often are overwhelmed at these junctures and it’s so important to seek help and support from a coach, advisor or counselor. Click here for information on my upcoming Success Bootcamp. Besides re-thinking your career, use your time off to TAKE CARE of yourself with BREATHING, exercise, meditation or prayer, and really thinking about what how you want your life to proceed for the next ten years to twenty years. If you have a passion see how you can turn that into a business. If you don’t know what your passion is take The Passion Test – my friend and fella coach Carol McKay www.dreamcoacher.com or(209) 524-2258 would be happy to take you through the process. Once you know what your passion is then you create a plan, take the action steps necessary, follow with dedication and voila – you’re out of transition and into your new career.

Exhausted Women – Here’s Relief – Supplements to Relax, De-stress or Energize Naturally

Are we going to get rid of stress? Yes, when we’re dead.

Working with women I hear all the time how tired & stressed they feel. Well, it’s no wonder. Women are working out of the home as never before AND most still do 70-80% (or more) of the household management. Yes, we work two jobs.

I’ve been interested in holistic health management since 1988 when I attended John F. Kennedy University in Ordinda, CA and earned a Masters in Psychology with a Holistic Health Specialization. I admit I am a bit of a health nut and want to share with you some of the most effective vitamin and natural supplements that keep me focused, energized, able to relax, sleep better and feel emotionally more balanced.

1) The first most basic supplements include a good multiple vitamin (Centrim is not a good product I’m sorry to say).

If you hate pills and are only willing to take one product, at least take this. Ask your health food store for a recommendation.

2) Vitamin B complex is the anti-stress vitamin. Again check with your health food store or I use Nature’s Sunshine Products (if you’re in Modesto contact Second Nature at (209) 549-0450.

3) Vitamin C: I love Emergen-C available at Trader Joe’s – just mix with water and take 2x a day – a.m. and p.m. Or also at TJ’s is a jar of Vitamin C Crystals (I use this) really inexpensive and lasts forever. Follow directions 2x a day. Vitamin C helps repair cellular damage and improves immune system function.

NOTE: To improve energy and lower anxiety, limit sodas & caffeine.

Coaches Challenge: Count the number of sodas or coffee’s per week – reduce and notice what happens to anxiety, stress, energy & sleep.

If you have some belly weight, check in with how many sodas you’re drinking a day.

The Next Level:

The supplements listed below are really terrific to for mild to moderate anxiety, relax the nervous system, improve sleep and balance energy. (* see disclaimer below)

AMINO ACIDS: I love amino acids and have taken them for years to manage stress. Amino acids are natural supplements. They do not have side effects. However if you take too much you may get a headache. If so, drink lots of water and take Vitamin c to flush quickly out of system. Best taken on empty stomach. These are all available at health food stores or online.

4) GABA – amino acid – relaxing. Take if stressed or tense. Recommended dosage 3 (See Julia Ross’sMood Cure or Diet Cure books)

1 500 mg. capsule on empty stomach. (Can take 2 or 3X a day or at night if having trouble getting to sleep.)

5) 5 HTP – all natural amino acid that converts to serotonin in brain. Buffers anxiety, natural anti-depressant, helps sleep. (Do not take if currently taking anti-depressant) 50 mg. Take 1-3 (See Julia Ross’s Mood Cure or Diet Cure books) CRAVING reducer: If you hit the wall at 3-5:00 p.m. and have sugar or carb cravings take on empty stomach.

6) L-Theanine – amino acid found in green tea. Supports mental calmness and relaxation. Very calming and focusing. Can be taken during high afternoon, evening stress, before bed or at night if awaken. Dr. Gray suggests 200-400 mg 2-3X a day, as needed. Dr. says taken at bedtime melts away stress.

7) PGX (PolyGlycopleX*: “a unique complex of water-soluble polysaccharides that help reduce blood sugar fluctuations” Blood sugar fluctuations really cause energy ups and downs. (Is available at Health Food Stores (*BE CAREful to DRINK LOTS of water with this - please read and follow directions carefully.

(* Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and am not prescribing any supplementation. Please take responsibility and be an informed consumer. Do your own research – see resources below. If you have a physician that’s holistically informed please consult with them – Dr. Lisa Hunt in Modesto, CA, is someone I refer to. (209) 577-2799)
