Isn’t Budget Another Word for Money Diet?

Personal Note

Business is booming and I am grateful and excited about 2012 and the opportunity to help lots more people understand and transform their relationship with Money. It’s amazing how much my own thinking and behavior with $$ has changed over the year – making more of it despite the economy and I’m managing $$ much more consciously. FUN.

Personally, 2011 was about letting go of relationships including some family. These weren’t my decisions and that’s always harder. What I know is that relationships change. To top it off, just before Xmas my husband and I experienced the loss of one of our best friends just before Christmas. Really tough.

However, I AM a present moment gal and life is rich, full and continuously growth provoking. My intention is to feel fully, release quickly, stay present and to enjoy the journey. I so appreciate and hold near and dear friends, family and client relationships that I treasure.

A Resolution or A Theme for 2012?

Do you create Resolutions or Goals? How about a Theme instead. Resolutions, like diets, are too often forgotten by March. Consider a theme instead. A theme is similar to an intention and becomes the ground from which everything springs.

Last year my theme was about listening to my God voice more than my ego voice. (No wonder it was such a year of growth?)

My theme for 2012 is to appreciate life in all its dimensions and is based on this quote from Lynne Twists’ book: The Soul of Money, “What you appreciate, appreciates.”

Isn’t Budget Another Word for Money Diet?

It’s January and how many of you are on a DIET? How long do you typically stay on a diet before you have to break out of JAIL? For most it’s only a few weeks. You feel deprived, you’re hungry, grumpy, have less energy (no kidding – you’re not feeding the cells of your body and they are letting you know). But, you lose the 5 or 10 pounds and you feel good. YEAH!! And then what? If you don’t have a PLAN to stay conscious, very conscious, about what you’re eating you will gain it ALL back and more. WHY do we keep doing this to ourselves – year after year?

Well one reason for this is we don’t like to suffer by not eating what we want - get it. And, most humans hate change. To stay on a plan month after month, year after year – BORING.

Isn’t the deprivation and the breaking out of jail the same way a BUDGET affects you? [READ MORE]

Happy Holidays from Lynn’s Heart to Yours

 Personal Note

It’s been almost a year since I started the Money Coach Training to become Certified (not Certifiable) and it’s been a fascinating year. I’ve been noticing subtle, but profound changes in my money behaviors. For example, I usually put off Christmas shopping until the last two weeks and then it’s a scramble. This year I have 2/3’s of the shopping done and had some (not all) packages wrapped before we got the tree. This year I’m also being more precise with my Xmas list and counting dollars spent as I go. (Have never done that before)! And, cash is Queen (who says it has to be King?) this year.

Before I went through the Money Coaching, I didn’t know I had a relationship with money. Most of the clients I work with (and I’ve been blessed to work with many this year) are amazed at the discoveries that come by exploring their emotional $$ history, patterns and beliefs in this unique way.

What do you think? Are our financial decisions emotional or logical? Research shows most are emotionally based, then we back up with rationalization or logic. An example: I want to buy my husband an expensive gift for Xmas that we can’t really afford. I rationalize the purchase by - pick one: “It’s the holidays, it’s only once a year, he works so hard he deserves it.” None of this is good or bad, but isn’t it interesting how the money brain works?

Big Surprise, But Not Everyone Loves The Holiday

Personal Note

So much to be thankful for. We’ve had the most incredible blazes of tree color this year. Every day when I’m walking my little Luna (Lynn is looney for Luna) yes I know, kookoo – I’m delighted by the gifts of nature – all free!!

I’m also aware that change is part of life. One of my most difficult challenges is letting go of people I care about. Like a dog with a bone, I try to hold on past the point when the signs are clear the relationship needs to be released. What’s your experience? Do you let go easily? Hang on past the expiration date?

Big Surprise, But Not Everyone Loves The Holidays

THE 7 Tips. If you’d like to the best chance of staying relatively sane during the holidays and NOT going over BUDGET here are 7 Tips to help you do so:

1) The Budget: First figure out how much IN TOTAL you want to spend on the Holidays. Include gifts, food, wrapping paper, party clothing (now we’re talking), hair & beauty products and of course alcohol. The average shopper spent $704 in 2010 and is projected to spend $14.00 less this year – who figures out this stuff?)*

2) Make a list of giftees - what you’re going to buy and the AMOUNT you are going to spend. Take the list with you when you shop – STICK to the list. No impulse buying (I’ve done this for years, primarily because if I didn’t make a list I wouldn’t remember who, what or how much. [Read More]

What To Do If You're Feeling Victimized By The Economy

Personal Note

"You take it all in. You let the pain of the world touch your heart and you turn it into compassion." Pema Chodron, When Things Falls Apart

Life has it’s ups and downs. My heart has opened more because of two stories I heard at women’s networking business meetings this week. This is what I love about women – we share from our heart and soul and that helps us know we’re not alone with the challenges we face. The fear, sadness, uncertainty I feel, you feel. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house, but it wasn’t sadness but appreciation for the journey of life that we all share. Perhaps you’ll relate too.

Roxanne, Women’s Success Network, Modesto shared how difficult it was to forgive her husband for the pain he caused her.

It took quite a few months of emotional struggle and soul searching, but she worked it through. He was soon afterwards diagnosed with cancer, which is now in remission. One nugget: Forgiveness is not about saying what someone did was ok. It’s about releasing the burden and freeing oneself. I’ve seen the light shining in Roxanne’s face and now I know why.

Karen Penfold from eWomen in Stockton and Elk Grove, is stepping away from her leadership position to focus on her health and “living.” Karen is not one to cry and when she spoke from her heart about the path of breast cancer her tears were very real. I relate to Karen who, like myself, is (or was) a driven gal. Softening to what’s really important in life – our relationships, health, being there for each other, enjoying the moments we have– is a discovery for all of us. She did a wonderful job for eWomen and I know it’s been a tough decision. All good health & well-being to you Karen.

What To Do If You're Feeling Victimized By The Economy

Deborah Price, International Money Coach and author of Money Magic, says too many people feel like money victims right now. A victim is characterized by powerlessness, hopelessness, and blame which is often the result of a great loss. Americans have good reason to feel victimized - from job loss and downsizing to fear of losing a job if they don’t work unreasonable hours, to short sales and foreclosures - there’s a lot of economic pain to spread around. And, the emphasis is on fear, which is not a good place to problem solve from... [Read More]

Women, Money & Power

Personal Note

My Bubble: I met a woman at a networking event recently and somehow the topic of crime came up. She reacted to a statistic I quoted that crime levels today are actually lower than in the 70s. She cited a number of burglaries that had occurred in her area that hadn’t in year’s prior. At the end she told me I live in a bubble. I suppose I do and I have to say it’s mostly a happy bubble. Let me explain. It’s not that I don’t see bad things happen in the world or stick my head in the sand. It’s also not that I haven’t had challenging things happen – I’ve had plenty.

But, I work every day to focus on the good in my neighborhood, neighbors, family, friends and myself. It’s not always easy, but it feels better than living in a state of fear or worry. In “Happiness for No Reason” Marci Shimoff shows a scale of Fear and Love. Fear = anger, sadness, tension, disappointment, emptiness, self-centeredness and Love = openness, gratitude, forgiveness, peace, hope, JOY, energy, vitality, passion.

The Course in Miracles states there’s always a choice between fear and love but we can only be in one state at a time. As more of us recognize and practice the choice for love, heal ourselves of our fears, worries, doubts and live in trust, hope and love, we and the world that is a reflection of our inside selves, will be a happier and happier place for all.

Women, Money & Power

I love this quote of Suze Orman’s: “If you’re not powerful with your money, you’re not powerful period.” Or, put another way: “If you’re not money savvy, you won’t have the freedom you really desire.”

Let’s talk about why it’s important for women to put their big girl pants on with money & power. Let’s also put your relationship with money in perspective. It’s only been since the 70s that women have been in the workforce in large numbers. Wow – we’ve come a long way baby!! Women are figuring out the whole idea of work, money, what we want to do with our money, and power (the ability to do, act or accomplish something). But often we put ourselves last when it comes to managing their money.

A 2006 Survey commissioned by Allianz Insurance found that 90% of the women respondents rated themselves as feeling insecure when it came to their finances. And, half said ending up as a bag lady had crossed their mind. Yowzah!

Ask yourself these questions to assess where you’re at with your relationship with money and power (the ability to act).

1) Do you know what your checking/saving balances are most days? If not, why not? Good rule of thumb: Take 2 minutes to look at online balances every day.

2) Do you pay your bills on time (assuming you’re working and have income coming in). If not, set up one day a week or two days a month, schedule it in your phone or set up automatic pay plans. Just do it.

3) Do you act in your own best interest with your money?

A) You give to yourself with money in healthy ways – savings, retirement, investing in your business, shopping wisely, (a lot of women piddle money away with Starbucks, unconscious spending or reward or nurture themselves with shopping when what they really need is attention, love, replenishment or other types of self-care.

B) You don’t financially enable family members.

C) You have goals and a plan for what you want to earn, strategies to accomplish that plan and you stay accountable with help from spouse, friend, mentor or coach.

D) You’re working to feel in charge of and manage the money you make. If you need help that’s great – read a book: Suze Orman, Women & Money is a good one - take a class, a workshop, get a bookkeeper, an accountant, a coach. “Money is an extension of ourselves."(Suze)

We need to stop being afraid of it, ignoring it, afraid of failing, feeling ashamed of how we are with our money, keeping our feelings a secret. We need to take our power back from money by putting those big girls pants on and managing it in our own (and our family’s) best interests.
